/Pharmaceutical PR News/ - MONROVIA, CA, April 18, 2008 - Dr. Saju Nettikadan, Director of Emerging Technologies at BioForce Nanosciences will be speaking at GTCbio's 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers on July 10-11, 2008 in Boston, MA. Dr. Nettikadan will present on "Towards Biomarker Detection from Single Cells."

Significant advances in proteomics have resulted in continued growth in use of antibody microarrays for multiplexed analysis of protein biomarkers. Since there are no PCR-like amplification methods for proteins, proteomic analysis are limited to rather large sample volumes and protein detection from a single cell or even a few cells is not currently possible. In an effort to detect proteins from few cells and ultimately single cells, Dr. Nettikadan and his colleagues have integrated several different technologies including miniaturization of capture domains, micro machined sensors and microfluidics for precise sample delivery.

The Nano eNabler technology permits the construction of ultramicro capture domains defined as domains in the two to twenty micrometer range. Dr. Nettikadan and his colleagues describe the application of antibody ultramicro arrays, for detection of human prostate specific antigen (PSA) and IL-6 from small (1 ?l) volumes. Using these ultramicro arrays, purified PSA was specifically detected in the attomole range. Data will be presented on the detection of PSA from less that 10 LNCaP cells, a well-characterized human prostate carcinoma cell line.

The developments in micromachining techniques have resulted in the development of novel sensor technologies such as the cantilever sensors that are capable of detecting minute quantities of analytes. However, one of the primary limitations in micromachined biosensor development is the functionalization of the sensing elements with the biological capture reagents. The Nano eNabler is an ideal tool to functionalize these elements. Dr. Nettikadan and his colleagues are also investigating the application of microfluidics for precise sample delivery to the capture domains in efforts to increase sensitivity.

Attendees of the conference will learn about single cell proteomics, minimally invasive or noninvasive diagnostics, and proteomic analysis of laser capture microdissected samples.

The 2nd Annual Rediscovering Biomarkers Conference will expose attendees to the latest advancements and developments in biomarkers and predictive medicine. Attendees will gain insight into discovery and development processes, hear about new biomarkers and upcoming trends in the industry, as well as the status of those in clinical trials. Delegates will also receive highly valuable information on tools for improving reimbursement strategies and the efficacy and validation of biomarkers.
