Drug Detox Center Criticizes Pharmaceutical Company Free Samples

Center Says Risk of Prescription Drug Addiction Higher Due To Free Drug Samples

SYLMAR, CA, October 26, 2008 /Pharmaceutical PR News/ -- Novus Medical Detox Facility of Pasco County, Florida (http://www.novusdetox.com) is criticizing the practice of pharmaceutical companies giving out free drug samples. The center says that free drug samples continue to be given to kids by the thousands, endangering their health and potentially leading to prescription drug addiction later in life.

"Remember the scenes in TV shows and movies where the evil drug pusher in the school yard offers kids a free sample of his deadly wares," said Novus Medical Detox Director Steven L. Hayes. "It was sort of a 'loss leader' to get kids addicted and coming back for more. A new study shows how free samples from Big Pharma are being passed out to millions of kids by their doctors, today's version of those dramatic scenes that could well be contributing to more prescription drug addiction among America's youth."

The study, published in the medical journal "Pediatrics," found that free prescription drug samples distributed to children may be unsafe because they don't carry the Black Box labels that appear on the regular size prescription packages warning about dangerous side effects and potential dependencies.

The study analyzed an in-depth survey conducted in 2004 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that asked people if they received free drug samples -- and more than 500,000 said their children received free drug samples. This helps explain how prescription drug addiction has become a national epidemic among young people. Tens of millions of kids have been placed on dangerous psychoactive drugs that can lead to abuse. While many free samples aren't psychoactive or addictive, many more free samples of easily abused psychoactive drugs are widely handed out to kids. These are the kinds that can quickly lead to recreational abuse and, down the road, other drugs and prescription drug addiction.

For those who were not fortunate enough to avoid the trap of prescription drugs, there is medical drug detox. While many medical detox programs take place in a hospital, Novus Medical Detox Center (http://www.novusdetox.com) specializes in handling drug dependencies in a private setting that is stress-free, comfortable and safe. The facility, set on 3.2 wooded acres 45 minutes north of Tampa, FL, offers private rooms, TV, DVDs and high speed internet access. Novus provides detox services for people wishing to withdraw from drugs including opiate detox, heroin detox, psychotropic detox, alcohol detox, benzodiazepine detox and prescription drug detox. They can be reached at 877-250-8267.
