Thorne Institute To Teach Cultural Proficiency To Pharmaceutical Executives

How Will Healthcare Reform Legislation Impact Communities of Color?

NEW YORK, NY, May 01, 2010 /Pharmaceutical PR News/ -- The Thorne Institute announced today collaboration with Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare to launch June 3-4, 2010 at the Levin Institute in New York City the first-of-its-kind cross-cultural educational program designed for pharmaceutical industry leaders, clinical researchers, and marketers. Under the guidance of 25-year veteran pharmaceutical industry multicultural marketer, Sheila Thorne, president and founder of The Thorne Institute, the two-day program brings together a faculty of the nation's preeminent experts in multicultural medicine, race, ethnicity, marketing and media who will speak to the unique health needs of people of African, Latino, Asian and Native American descent. The inaugural program will take attendees through the history of racial and ethnic health disparities to the cultural competency movement in healthcare delivery to how will healthcare reform legislation impact communities of color to "best practices" in building a multicultural strategic and tactical plan.

"We are proud to have Sheila Thorne as Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Social Welfare to teach cultural competency to pharmaceutical industry leaders and executives," says Frances L. Brisbane, PhD, Dean of Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare and Director of The Center for Culturally Competent Education and Training. "Sheila is truly a trailblazer and expert in the multicultural healthcare marketing arena. Her in-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical business model combined with her track record of developing and implementing successful ethnic health promotional initiatives throughout the United States and abroad on their behalf will make this unique program dynamic, timely, relevant and practical," continues Brisbane.

"The pharmaceutical industry has lagged way behind other sectors of the healthcare industry in its understanding of and response to the overwhelming data on pervasive and persistent racial and ethnic health disparities in America," says Thorne. "Dramatic U.S. demographic shifts, expanded health coverage to 32 million new consumers with the historic healthcare reform legislation - over 50% from communities of color - demand a departure from business as usual in pharmaceutical clinical research and marketing," continues Thorne. "It's time that the pharmaceutical industry takes its place as a key stakeholder in the elimination of health disparities within the context of its business model in the communities where it does its business. It is not only the right thing to do, but it makes good business sense," added Thorne.
