Marla Ahlgrimm and Madison Pharmacy Associates: The First Pharmacy in the U.S. to Specialize in Women's Health

Marla Ahlgrimm's revolutionary pharmacy for women began working with hormone therapy in the late 1970s.

MADISION, WI, December 14, 2011 /Pharmaceutical PR News/ -- Marla Ahlgrimm founded Madison Pharmacy Associates in Madison, Wisconsin, nearly thirty years ago. Incorporated in 1982 in direct response to an expressed need in the community for customized natural hormone therapy, Madison Pharmacy Associates has helped more than 300,000 women throughout the nation.

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, the idea to focus on women's health began in the late 1970s, when Marla Ahlgrimm and her colleagues worked to help one woman who had been suffering with severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) for two weeks out of every month. "There was no diagnosis or treatment options for her symptoms in the U.S. except tranquilizers, antidepressants, or a hysterectomy," Marla Ahlgrimm recalls. "Through our own research, we identified her symptoms as PMS and as pharmacists, worked with her doctor to develop a natural progesterone prescription for her. She was the first to use natural progesterone in the U.S."

Marla Ahlgrimm was surprised when the term PMS caught on and became part of mainstream medicine. As news of her work began to spread, Marla Ahlgrimm co- founded Madison Pharmacy Associates, making it the first pharmacy in the country to focus on women's health.

With sensitive diagnostic testing and customized prescriptions, Marla Ahlgrimm has offered treatment options for women dealing with a variety of hormone related concerns, including PMS, perimenopause, and menopause. These medications include natural replacement for decreased estrogen, DHEA, thyroid, and more.

Instead of prescribing traditional "one size fits all" drug therapy, Marla Ahlgrimm customizes each prescription to the needs of each patient. Hormones are available in a variety of dosage forms including capsules, tablets, transdermal and vaginal creams, and patches. As a licensed pharmacist, Marla Ahlgrimm and her staff work with each patient and her doctor to find the method that best fits her health needs.

Pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm founded Women's Health America, as her companies grew. She consults with patients about the influence of a healthy lifestyle on hormone levels and symptoms. In fact, Marla Ahlgrimm helps patients develop a self-care plan as the foundation of any hormone replacement program that is undertaken. This plan can include changes in diet and exercise, over-the-counter nutritional supplements, and stress management.

"Long before the term 'women's health' even existed, we were listening to women tell us about their health concerns—what they need, what works for them, and what doesn't," Marla Ahlgrimm reports. "That shared history and experience forms the foundation for all of our products and services."

At Madison Pharmacy Associates, Marla Ahlgrimm's staff of consulting pharmacists, nurses, and health educators has more than 100 years of combined experience in women's health. Patients receive free updates on breakthroughs in women's health, as well as revolutionary products that can help patients lead healthier lives.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marla Ahlgrimm, R.Ph. has co-authored two books on women's issues—The HRT Solution and Self-Help for Premenstrual Syndrome. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Marla Ahlgrimm can also help with bone loss, antiaging, and men's issues.

Marla Ahlgrimm, pharmacist, is a pioneer in the area of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and hormone imbalance. She has made educating women and their doctors about individualized healthcare choices her personal mission. An acknowledged women's health expert, healthcare provider and entrepreneur, Marla Ahlgrimm was one of the first in America to recognize, define and develop low-dose, natural hormone prescription therapy for managing the symptoms of PMS starting in the late 1970's.

Starting with one woman who suffered severely for 2 weeks of every month, Marla Ahlgrimm identified her symptoms as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), and discovered a treatment option in Europe that wasn't available in the United States. Marla Ahlgrimm worked with her doctor to provide a customized, natural progesterone prescription for her. She was the first to be treated with natural progesterone in America. By word of mouth, more women and their doctors heard of the work she was doing and her pharmacy practice began to grow.

In 1982, Marla Ahlgrimm co-founded Madison Pharmacy Associates, Inc., the first pharmacy in the United States to specialize in women's health, specifically PMS. She had a vision of what personalized healthcare for women should be - an integration of exacting pharmaceutical science, state-of-the-art laboratory technology, and the traditional values of listening and responding to a patient's individual health needs. Madison Pharmacy Associates was among the first in America to earn the PCAB Seal of Accreditation by meeting rigorous standards for excellence, quality and safety.

In 1993, Marla Ahlgrimm founded Women's Health America to serve the unique and complex hormonal health needs of women of all ages concerned about infertility, PMS, perimenopause, menopause, and healthy aging.
